In the 1900s a company out of Ohio called the air way sanitizer introduced the first vacuum cleaner to come with a disposable bag. Before them, everyone’s vacuum resembled those you take out on the fairway on a Sunday afternoon. They were heavy cumbersome machines made out of thick fabric, at first designed to be as flexible as possible and yet still trap the dust and dirt from the carpets.

The improvement made by folks out of Ohio when they introduced the disposable vacuum bags marked a huge improvement towards the effectiveness of the vacuum cleaner compared to its predecessor. The bag, made out of paper at that time, was designed to fit inside the pouch as designed during this period. Cleaning the vacuum itself was not a chore anymore and more importantly the insides of the pouch was kept clean do that dust and dirt would not be blown out of the vacuum and of course like mentioned before you wouldn’t want to disperse the dust back in the house! What’s the point of that?

At this time each of the big manufacturers’ all designed their own vacuum bags made out of a selection of different papers. The problem here was that they were no universal and cannot be switched from one machine to another, and to add to that the parts and configuration were all different for each of the vacuums. From here, it was through this idea, that they release they can for lack of a better term to exploit a new stream of business income by offering vacuum bags! Not only do they have to rely on purely just machine sales

Before, people who had their machines all it needed was a cleaning here and there and bringing it into the shop for servicing, or if you feel adventurous you could do it yourself. But because of this surge, repair shops began to spring up across the country
And of course by today, these repair shops have died down, however vacuum bags still have a market just for the fact that each and every vacuum has its pros and cons that you should consider when purchasing, going forward I will definitely mention and do some introduction and reviews on some of the vacuum bags and vacuum cleaners out there for you

I know this site is about vacuum bags, but like I mentioned I would like to also touch about the different vacuums out in the market, and like I mentioned about the rising popularity of the bagless vacuums I decided that I need to mention whether you should go bag or bagless?

I think the most common misconception about bagless vacuums is that people would automatically think oh my gosh, no more replacing vacuum bags this must be a good deal! Imagine the look on their face when they take their vacuums to the repair store only to find out that they need to change the filters on these bad boys. Getting a bagless vacuum would not save you that much money because in the long run the money you thought you had save is going to be going towards buying new filters! Funny thing is those people who don’t buy vacuum bags are exactly the people who are somehow anti filters too, and inevitably that leads to declined performance and downright dirty vacuums. The benefit from these bagless vacuums would probably be their advantage when cleaning pet hair, so if you are a pet lover this might be a good reason to consider a bagless vacuum, also considering that some houses that a huge volume of vacuum hair these vacuums can be very effective. Like anything in life, things wear and tear, these vacuums will still become filthy and filters MUST be cleaned and/or replaced depending on usage, so if you think about it vacuum bags vs filters, you are still pretty much spending the same amount of money in the long run. And I am assuming that you want to go through a few vacuums a year but rather have one that will last you!

Just a personal opinion of mine is that, sometimes these bagless vacuums give me a very VERY disgusting picture of things people will suck up in their vacuums *shudder*, that’s just my opinion but vacuum bags just hide all the “surprises” so I can dispose of them in my own convenience without having to gag at the site of the things I see in these things. But like I said this is just my personal opinion remember at the end of the day you buy the vacuum hoping that it is doing its job, so choosing according to your most important purpose and then look at design and form.

I can’t stress this enough when I say remember you are not saving money on filters and/or vacuum bags, matter of fact treat these as maintenance costs like you do on your car, if you want to rely on it you must treat it with the right tools!

Today I’ve decided to talk about canister vacuums and what they may be good for and maybe help you out on which vacuum to get and subsequently, which could help you out choosing your replacement vacuum bags. I can’t stress how important that is! (I will revisit that in another post, that and filters!)

First off canister vacuums usually “appear” to be quieter, I saw that with “” because designs are more or less the same its just that compared to say a upright vacuum, the sound from a canister is coming from behind you rather that right in front of you so you feel that it is quieter, which of course comes down to personal preference. Canister vacuums are actually more ideal for cleaning bare floors such as bathroom, kitchen etc. Even like stairs, in cars and those hard to reach places. The suction is good and of course with that kind of design it is more agile than a big upright vacuum.

I think no matter if you choose canister or upright or bagless (which I will talk about in a later post, since these are starting to get really popular but are they really that good?) it can come down to style and of course like I mentioned the usage. Canisters have a tendency to need more space, so if you are living in a 400 square feet home it may not make sense to have a large size canisters, but then again you wouldn’t have to replace the vacuums bags so often =P. Other than that of course there are different designs that may appeal to you more and some not so much, regardless of what you do I have to briefly mention that as with anything, if you expect it to work well

a) You have to use it properly

b) You have to maintain it properly and this includes taking good care of it and not do things like chucking it back into the closet!

c) Perform the necessary maintenance – like the name of this site, vacuum bags! You’ll be surprised as to how often this is taken lightly on top of that of course the filter, the belt and the assortment of parts.

I think I started this blog to really try to educate people to be aware of things that they should be paying attention and spending money on and things they shouldn’t and often it is sometimes something as small as vacuum bags.
